This time the volunteers were told how they did, and in half of the cases, they learned that the trustee had burned them and kept the money. How would that work? Both sexes secrete oxytocin - what about its role in males? Males synthesize oxytocin in the same regions of the hypothalamus as in females, and also within the testes and perhaps other reproductive tissues. Pulses of oxytocin can be detected during ejaculation. Current evidence suggests that oxytocin is involved in facilitating sperm transport within the male reproductive system and perhaps also in the female, due to its presence in seminal fluid. It may also have effects on some aspects of male sexual behavior.
In another study, published in PNAS in 2010, men were given a dose of oxytocin and asked to write about their mothers. Those with secure relationships described their moms as more caring after the hormone dose. Those with troubled relationships actually saw their mothers as less caring. The hormone may help with the formation of social memories, according to the study researchers, so a whiff strengthens previous associations, whether good or bad.

Additionally, bilateral interactions with numerous systems, including the dopamine system, Hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and immune system, can impact development of dependence. The status of the endogenous oxytocin system might enhance or reduce susceptibility to addiction through its interaction with these systems. Individual differences in the endogenous oxytocin system based on genetic predisposition, gender and environmental influences, may therefore affect addiction vulnerability.[72] Oxytocin may be related to the place conditioning behaviors observed in habitual drug abusers.

Hi Ben. Have a groin problem which I have had for years and it just won’t go away it’s not a hernia or osteitis pubis I had an MRI and the specialist said they wouldn’t operate. I can still play sport but I’m just less agile and slower than normal and it takes a few days for the groin pain to go away after sport. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), a thymidine analogue, can be incorporated into the DNA of dividing cells and is widely used to label new cells.61-63 To label proliferating cells, BrdU (100 mg/kg) was injected i.p. daily starting at day 1 post TBI for 10 days. The number of BrdU-positive cells found in the ipsilateral cortex, DG, and CA3 areas was significantly increased 35 days after TBI compared with sham controls.18,34,64,65 Tβ4 treatment further increased the number of BrdU-positive cells compared to saline controls.34 The increased number of BrdU-positive cells may result from effects of Tβ4 on either increasing cell proliferation or reducing cell death of newborn cells. Our recent data show Tβ4 increases oligodendrocyte precursor cell proliferation and differentiation in animal models of stroke25 and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.27 Tβ4 may not directly affect cell proliferation but inhibit cell death, for example, in corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells treated with benzalkonium chloride in vitro66 and endothelial precursor cells under serum deprivation.67 Our data further show that neurogenesis increases in TBI rats treated with Tβ4, suggesting that Tβ4 promotes newborn cells to differentiate into neurons. This is consistent with the effect of Tβ4 on promoting epicardium-derived progenitor cell differentiation into endothelial and smooth muscle cells to form the coronary vasculature.22 Whether the increased number of BrdU-positive cells in the brain of TBI rats treated with Tβ4 is tissue specific remains unknown. Tβ4 may not directly affect cell proliferation. Increased cell proliferation and neurogenesis are also possibly secondary to that Tβ4-mediated angiogenesis, as described later.
I found this to be an excellent supplement for myself, which overcomes the rate limiting step when the body converts tryptophan to 5-HTP. This current literature is notable for its apparent irrelevancy to an AFL footballer. It begs the question; did Tβ4 make a difference to the Essendon players? The only honest answer is that we don’t know. Most of our understanding exists on a molecular and cellular level, without any significant appreciation of how Tβ4 influences applicable outcomes such as exercise performance, endurance, muscle strength, and time to recovery. Furthermore, as the majority of research has been performed on mice, rat and pig models, any results are not directly translatable to a human, let alone an elite athlete. This is a stark contrast to a supplement such as EPO, which has been investigated thoroughly.
Ingroup bonding: Oxytocin can increase positive attitudes, such as bonding, toward individuals with similar characteristics, who then become classified as "in-group" members, whereas individuals who are dissimilar become classified as "out-group" members. Race can be used as an example of in-group and out-group tendencies because society often categorizes individuals into groups based on race (Caucasian, African American, Latino, etc.). One study that examined race and empathy found that participants receiving nasally administered oxytocin had stronger reactions to pictures of in-group members making pained faces than to pictures of out-group members with the same expression.[62] This shows that oxytocin may be implicated in our ability to empathize with individuals of different races and could potentially translate into willingness to help individuals in pain or stressful situations. Moreover, individuals of one race may be more inclined to help individuals of the same race than individuals of another race when they are experiencing pain. Oxytocin has also been implicated in lying when lying would prove beneficial to other in-group members. In a study where such a relationship was examined, it was found that when individuals were administered oxytocin, rates of dishonesty in the participants' responses increased for their in-group members when a beneficial outcome for their group was expected.[63] Both of these examples show the tendency of individuals to act in ways that benefit those considered to be members of their social group, or in-group.
Do I have to diet? Studies show that 5-HTP enhances weight loss even if you continue eating your normal foods. But in a recent study published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, Ditzen and her colleagues measured salivary alpha-amylase (sAA)—an enzyme tied specifically to social stress—and found that men and women responded differently. Women who got oxytocin showed a decrease in sAA whereas men showed an increase and reported feeling more intense emotions. Wow I wonder if it will help those of us with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome – a collagen disorder that causes ligament laxity and makes those with it prone to easy subluxations and early onset arthritis. I have so many injuries from my daily life due to this disorder. How not surprising on one level that a hormone involved in the formation of primary bonds, those that can have serious impacts on your survival, would be discerning. After all, if you had a mother who was dangerous, abusive, etc., how counter productive would it be for you to bond so tightly to her that you were all over her all the time, increasing your chances of pissing her off and killing you. And, how beneficial for you to be more bonded to a mother figure who was good to you, and provided you with nurture.
